Every shower. Every day (or every other day, no judgment). It goes on your scalp, which is one of the most absorbent areas of your body. Warm water opens your pores. Steam opens your lungs. Whatever is in that bottle gets absorbed efficiently while you stand there thinking about your to-do list.
Most conventional shampoos contain sulfates, synthetic fragrance, parabens, and silicones. The sulfates strip your hair. The silicones coat it to make it feel smooth (masking the damage from the sulfates). The fragrance makes it smell like a tropical vacation. And the cycle continues, because your hair now “needs” conditioner to undo what the shampoo just did.

The Ingredients Worth Avoiding

Sulfates (SLS / SLES). Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate are the lathering agents in most shampoos. They create that satisfying foam. They also strip your hair of natural oils, irritate sensitive scalps, and can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane (a byproduct of the manufacturing process). Your hair doesn’t need that much foam to get clean.
Synthetic fragrance. The word “fragrance” or “parfum” on a label can hide dozens of undisclosed chemicals. This is the same loophole we covered in our non toxic perfume guide. In shampoo, these chemicals sit on your scalp all day. Choose unscented or essential oil-scented options.
Parabens. Preservatives linked to endocrine disruption. Most clean brands have eliminated them already. If a label lists methylparaben, propylparaben, or butylparaben, keep looking.
Silicones (dimethicone, cyclomethicone). These coat your hair in a plastic-like film to make it feel smooth. They build up over time, weigh hair down, and prevent moisture from getting in. They’re not dangerous, but they’re part of the strip-and-coat cycle that makes your hair dependent on conventional products.
Formaldehyde releasers (DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15). These slowly release formaldehyde as a preservative. In a product that sits on your scalp in a warm, steamy shower. Worth avoiding.

The Transition Period (Be Patient)
Switching to non toxic shampoo and conditioner comes with an adjustment period. Here’s what to expect.
Week 1-2: Your hair might feel different. Maybe oilier. Maybe drier. Definitely less “smooth” than silicone-coated hair. This is your hair detoxing from the strip-and-coat cycle. It’s normal.
Week 3-4: Your scalp starts regulating its oil production. It’s been overproducing oil to compensate for the sulfates stripping everything away. Without the stripping, production slows down. Your hair feels more balanced.
